The journey for personal development is a tricky one. Most of us want to better ourselves for the long haul, but aren’t sure how to do it. Some of us know how to do it, but have times of discouragement and impatience. A majority of us may be tempted to give up. We’ll experience turmoil from those who once loved us, ridicule from those who can’t stand us and even uncertainty from ourselves. However, becoming better people is what life is all about. We are not meant to be the same throughout our whole lives – it’s important to acknowledge that. Some of us change for the worse, due to our personal circumstances; others, decide to take control and change for the better. For those of us who like to be our best, this post is for you. When things get rough on your journey for personal development, remember these four things:
- It’s a COMMITMENT. When you decide you want to become a better person, you are making a commitment to yourself to do just that. Your decision will not get you there alone; it must be something you truly want and are dedicated to. It will take a lot of analysis and self evaluation, but it will be worth it. Going into it with the understanding that it will take time, will ease some of the frustration caused by impatience.
- It should become a HABIT. Being a better person is not a one time quick fix. You don’t just respond to one thing, one way and consider yourself better. It’s consistent adjustments, constantly abiding by the rules you set for yourself and continuously living through your values and morals. There is not one plan that can be written to make you a better person. Much like being healthy should become a habit – eating the right things, exercising, getting adequate rest and etc. – personal development is the same. You are constantly working at it, every day – breaking old habits and creating better, new ones.
- It’s okay to SEEK HELP. Self-help books, personal development blogs, and support groups are great resources to get you started on your journey. Although it is a journey for yourself, you do not have to do it alone. There are tons of resources available and tons of people willing to help. Find a mentor, read a book catered to exactly what you’re trying to improve, talk to friends – it will all help. Much like any big change in your life, you don’t have to go through it alone. Remember that you bettering yourself is a great thing for you and those around you – don’t be ashamed to get them involved or to seek out help; especially during the trying times.
- Lastly, you must remember that your journey for personal development, is in fact, a JOURNEY. There will be ups, downs, dips and turns. It will not always be easy and it will not always be hard. The one thing constant however, is that it will be worth it. With each obstacle, your character develops and you become that much closer to becoming the man or woman you hope to be. DON’T GIVE UP!
Was there ever a time that remembering one of these things, kept you on your journey? Tell me about it!
